Elevating the Role of
the Social Worker
Mary Raymer, LMSW,
ACSW, DPNAP
October 29, 2010
Hilton Garden Inn Baltimore/ Arundel Mills
Social work is a much
misunderstood profession. In hospice and palliative care it
is also all too often underutilized. At a time when there
are numerous societal issues, public perceptions and
political realities impacting delivery of care, the social
work professional’s contributions are more crucial than ever
before. This session will examine a contextual framework
for practice in America today, as well as identify the
leadership responsibilities and opportunities that are
inherent in our professional roles. As professionals, we
must provide high quality interventions but also must be
advocates for the expert treatment and care of the “whole”
person. In these challenging times it is critical that we
are clear about our roles and responsibilities and that we
are contributing in healthy and meaningful ways including
advocating for our own profession. Strategies for renewing
our energy as individuals as well as collectively will also
be discussed as necessary measures to make sure that we are
a consistent and vital component of the end of life
healthcare continuum.
