Palliative Care Hotline

Physician's Palliative Care Pain Hotline

Maryland is the first state in the nation to have a 24 hour pain hotline, where any physician who has a pain management question can call and receive the immediate expertise of a physician who has been trained and certified in the specialty of hospice and palliative care medicine.

The initial call will be handled through the Emergency Medical Resource Center (EMRC) answering services, as other statewide emergency services are handled.  The physician calling the hotline should requisite the "pain hotline".

Then dispatcher will take the calling physician's name and phone number and will indicate that a pain management physician will call back within 15 minutes.  The on-call physician will then be paged immediately.  If there is no response to the EMRC with in five minutes, a second page will be placed.  If there has been no response after 10 minutes, the back-up physician will be paged.

The hotline has been established as a toll-free number

that will be available to physicians who wish to obtain immediate

consultation on pain management in palliative care.

All on-call physicians are board-certified in hospice and palliative care medicine.

The toll-free phone number is 1-800-492-3805
